For every commercial organization, they need to be well organized in order to perform their functions properly. It would be better to say that every company gets divided into many line functions so as to address every portion of their functionality. In modern management structure, line function and staff function are two major pillars. Line function management system is directly concerned with sales, production, target achievement etc. Staff function is concerned with assistance of line managers so as to achieve target. Accountability is the main difference between staff functions and line functions. Line management section is directly responsible for target achievement. All main functional areas like sales, production, marketing comes under line management system. On the other hand, it would be right to say that staff function is more like an advisory function through which company tries to get more and more efficient on different section. Proper balance between these two functions ensures company’s efficiency.
Both staff and line functions have their different hierarchies. In any company, it is a general rule that people from both staff and line functions can meet and discuss various aspects but they don’t have authority for countermanding each other. Whenever any instruction from the side of staff managerial level comes then it need to be followed by line managers. Line managers can also overrule the instructions of staff managers if there is any reason for that. Staff managerial level has complete command over line management section. All management system is directly concerned with staff management system. If there is requirement of any staff in company then request is first sent to concerned staff management section. Finally it would be not wrong to say that line and staff management are two wheels of same cart which should run properly so as to ensure proper functioning.
